Old Mill Estate Rose Reviews
"Ferrari scarlet, this baby's a racer in every other
sense of the word, right
through to its cheeky smokin' tail.
Chockers with maraschino
cherries, raspberries and cranberries; fleshy with a
sharp lemony top note, and an acrid terroir edge that's
somewhere between hot clutch and struck
flint. Made from the
grand vintage
port grape, touriga nacional, it has texture and
mouth-filling viscosity like no
other pink. Take it for a
squirt to your nearest
fishmonger or fowl rotisserie."

"This is made
from Touriga Nacional which is interesting. I probably dish out some highish
scores to rosé, some might think, but I base the points on a number of factors
including refreshment value, interest, balance, finish and whether you might
want to knock over a bottle and quite possibly how quickly you might want to do
it. This, therefore, makes the cut as an Excellent wine on the old Winorama
rating scale.Watermelon
pink in colour with pretty lightly floral redcurrant and red berry aromas. On the palate fresh and feathery
with bright red fruits and a little spice. A clean burst of flavour coupled
with fine acidity and even a bit of textural grip add interest to this most
refreshing wine. It strikes that fine balance between juicy fruit and dryness
that makes this beauty an irresistible drinking proposition."

"This
surprised me no end. Not sure why, but when I read that this was Touriga I
expected a mouthpuckering dry tough drink. On the contrary - this is light and
easy - elegant and subtly. Strawberry and raspberry fruit, lovely light lines
of acidity and quite a long subtle finish. I could have drunk much much
more...instantly up in the upper echelons of pink wine in Australia."

"A native of 'soon to be
trendy' wine nation, Portugal, Touriga is most famously associated with Vintage Port. A far cry from this sweet
fortified elixir, Peter and Vicki
Widdop's Langhorne Creek fruit has assumed the guise of a savoury,
berry-scented Rosé, all brambly and perfumed
with some red currants in the
mix. The palate is nicely weighted with
plenty of flavour and chewy savoury
fruit tannin, adding grip through the finish:this doesn't rely on sugar
to get over the line. It's all about
balance and charm."
Nick Stock - Autumn 2007, Sumptuous
"A vivacious and cheeky light red from a small
Langhorne Creek producer. It's chockers
with fresh raspberries and maraschino cherries with dry savoury palate making
it a superb summer food wine."
Kylie Fleming, Uncorked - Messenger Press - 17January, 2007
"Here's a pink wine that should appeal to both
sexes at the barbecue. With the fresh, raspberry
fruitiness a rosé must have, there's also a steely backbone to it that could
see it cope with a charred chop. It is
another rare Australian rosé that
doesn't try to charm with sugar sweetness."
Greg Duncan Powell - Sydney Morning Herald, 6-7 January, 2007
"Grown by Peter and Vicki Widdop
and made by Simon Parker, this is the oldest of the three vintages of
this wine entered, and probably the best for its extra age, although all won 93 points. The 06 was marello and maraschino cherry audacity ; the 07 more juvenile fruitgums
and maraschino, with a dusting of that wild phosphate allure. But
here, at three years of age, we have
lovely charcuterie meats and leather, with the sublime viscosity of this
rare Portuguese port variety giving staunch, full support."
Philip White - 93 Points The Independent Weekly, August 11-17, 2007
"Touriga's spiritual home is Portugal, traditionally deployed in
their highly regarded fortifiedwines, although a recent sweeping trend
is seeing a good deal diverted towards dry red tablewine. This fruit comes from Peter and Vicki Widdop's vineyard on the Langhorne Creek floodplain, transformed into a striking pink wine that's loaded with flavour. Aromas arebrambly,
some dark berries and red currant fruits backed with gentle fragrance.
The palate isnicely weighted with good honest fruit flavour, juicy and fresh. It finishes with a little chew and sturdy
balance. Alcohol is just a snip over 12
per cent."

"Rosé is risky. Far too much sweet
and sour bland muck. ………. but my
favourite is one I must confess to having steered, stylewise, as a
sort of joint effort with Old Mill Estate.
It's made from touriga
nacional, the vintage port grape from Portugal, and it's got more cherries
than erryville. You can try it at The Grange or The Exeter."
